Our Icelandic horses are small but strong, friendly, sure-footed, and perfect for riders of all experience levels, including beginners.
Did you know that Icelandic horses were already used as war horses in Viking times and were held in high regard? They are known for their unique five gaits: walk, trot, canter, pace, and the special tölt. The tölt is a smooth, flowing gait that offers exceptional riding comfort—making your journey through Lapland’s wilderness even more enjoyable.

Who are we?
After long careers in international equestrian sports and hospitality, we settled down in one of the most beautiful places in Finland. From our deep love and passion for horses—combined with the breathtaking winters and the magic of the Northern Lights—our company was born: Lapin Vaellushevoset (Lapland Horse Trekking).
We offer small-scale treks on our Icelandic horses, right in the heart of Lapland’s stunning wilderness. One of our special experiences includes evening rides, where you can admire the Northern Lights from horseback. After each ride, you’re welcome to relax by the fire and enjoy a warm drink as you soak in the moment.

frequently asked questions
No experience is required for our day rides — they’re suitable for both beginners and experienced riders. For the evening Northern Lights rides, we recommend some prior riding experience due to lower visibility and colder conditions.
The minimum age is 12 years. Younger children may be allowed if they have previous trekking experience — please contact us to discuss.
Yes, the maximum rider weight is 90 kg (198 lbs). This is for the safety of both rider and horse.
We keep our tours small and personal, with a maximum of 4 participants per group.
Our tours are guided in both Dutch and English.
Please dress warmly in layers and wear weather-appropriate, sturdy shoes or boots — especially for evening rides, when temperatures can drop significantly.
Your safety and comfort are our priority. We provide the following gear for all our rides:
Riding helmet
Polar suit / snow suit (for warmth in cold weather)
Balaclava (worn under the helmet for extra warmth and hygiene)
You're welcome to bring your own gear if you prefer, but we make sure you're fully equipped to enjoy the ride safely and comfortably — even in Arctic conditions.
While we can’t guarantee a Northern Lights sighting, riding under the Arctic night sky is always a magical experience, with or without the aurora.

About Äkäslompolo
Äkäslompolo in Finnish Lapland is a prime location for horseback riding. Close to Kittilä Airport and Kolari train station, the village is surrounded by fells, forests, and moorlands that form the starting point for horse trekking in Lapland.
Our Icelandic horses take you on guided rides across scenic trails. In summer you ride under the Midnight Sun near Äkäslompolo and Kittilä, while in winter you cross snowy forests and frozen lakes. Every season brings a distinct riding experience in Lapland.
Whether new to horseback riding or an experienced rider, Äkäslompolo, near Kolari and Kittilä offers direct access to authentic trails in Finnish Lapland, combining accessibility with untouched nature.
